IPSF 2025: Study on the effect of Butylin 54 on broiler performance

Dr Julian Enrique Melo, Dietaxion's technical expert for the LATAM region, presented at IPSF 2025 (IPPE, Atlanta) the results of a study we performed on the effect of Butylin 54 supplementation on broiler performance, pododermatitis, and intestinal health.

The study was done in collaboration with INTA, Argentina’s National Institute of Agricultural Technology. This agricultural research center is part of the ministry of agriculture, livestock, fisheries and food.

During the presentation, Dr. Julian Enrique Melo highlighted the very interesting results of our study.

Improving animal performance

Supplementing broilers with our Butylin 54 nutritional solution throughout the rearing period (0-33 days) significantly increased live weight at slaughter by 3.4% without increasing feed intake. As a result, the animals’ feed conversion ratio (FCR) improved (-3.1%).

Better gut health

During the study, histomorphology of the duodenum and jejunum was analyzed to show the effect of Butylin 54 on intestinal health – specifically the ratio of villus length to crypt depth.

Broilers supplemented with Butylin 54 had a higher ratio than those in the control group. This study confirms the positive effect of Butylin 54, a double-buffered butyrate, on intestinal health.

Reduction in pododermatitis score

The study also demonstrated the positive effect of Butylin 54 supplementation on the pododermatitis score

In conclusion, this study highlights that supplementation with Butylin 54 is an interesting strategy to implement on farms to save resources and reduce pododermatitis prevalence.

In summary, this study shows that Butylin 54 supplementation is an interesting strategy to implement on farms to save resources and reduce pododermatitis scores by impacting excreta composition.
